Knowing your available time and your audience, choose one or many of the dialogue starters below.

Reaction Questions

1.    From your experience, what do you know about or what have you seen that could be considered assistive technology?  Please give examples.

2.    What do you see is the purpose of using assistive technology?

3.    How can assistive technology impact the students in your district/state? The families? The educators?

4.    Does your district/state have equipment available/accessible for students who need assistive technology? 

  • Do you know of school and community resources to obtain necessary assistive technology?
  • What are the resources you know can be accessed?

5.    How might the use of assistive technology in our school/district/state be influenced by the current focus on demonstration of growth in the academic standards?

Application Questions

1.    What processes/guidelines can we put into place to ensure that students in need of assistive technology have

  • Appropriate devices available;
  • An assistive technology evaluation and who is responsible;
  • Assistive technology equipment trials, the level of success with use, and who is responsible; and
  • Purchasing appropriate equipment in a timely manner?

2.    How can we ensure that information about assistive technology be made available to parents and families with students with disabilities?  How can we ensure that parents are fully aware of their options before pursuing assistive technology devices for their children?

3.    Who will be responsible for implementing the assistive technology and teaching the student how to use it?  How will we ensure that the responsible person is appropriately trained?

4.    Who in your school or district has knowledge of assistive technology?  How do we access that expertise?  If you do not know, how can you find out?
